FAQs on Women’s Health and Gynecology:

What is the Definition of Women’s Health?

The term “women's health” refers to a branch of medical care that focuses on the treatment and diagnosis of reproductive diseases and conditions that affect a woman's physical and emotional well-being. This is a very broad branch of medicine and can include everything from pelvic exams, to STD (sexually transmitted diseases) testing, to family planning.

How Often Do I Need a Wellness Visit for Gynecologic Care?

Just like with primary care in general, annual assessments are an ideal schedule to set for gynecologic care. Annual visits allow doctors to counsel patients about preventive care, as well as provide any recommended services that may be needed. These services and assessments include screenings and immunizations, which are offered to women on an individual basis (based on age, risk factors, and current screening recommendations).

Note that while an annual visit is recommended for a generalized exam, many specific screenings and tests are not needed on an annual basis! Because the recommended cadence for many assessments and tests varies (by risk, age, etc.), you will want to talk to your doctor about the current recommended schedule for services such as pap smears, pelvic exams, and so forth. Once you have your doctor’s recommendation on when you should undergo each of these important procedures, you can schedule your appointments accordingly!
